Recent communication was released in the press about obtaining weight loss injections (i.e. Mounjaro) through your local GP surgery. This service is not part of our standard GP contract and some practices might choose not to sign up for it.
A staged approach has been chosen to service rollout within primary care, which means the NHS will manage the flow of eligible people over several years so the NHS is not overwhelmed. At first, only those patients who meet specific eligibility criteria will have access. Over time, the criteria may be widened to offer more patients the treatment.
Eligibility criteria for the first year cohort will include a small number of patients who have a BMI of 40 or more (adjusted for ethnicity) presenting with at least 4 other weight-related health problems, including:
- dyslipidaemia (abnormal fat levels in the blood)
- hypertension (high blood pressure)
- obstructive sleep apnoea (when your breathing stops and starts while you sleep)
- cardiovascular disease (heart and blood vessel disease)
- type 2 diabetes mellitus
For now, we ask that you do not contact your GP surgery to try and obtain tirzepatide (Mounjaro), or any other injections for weight loss. We are not currently prescribing tirzepatide (Mounjaro) for weight loss. We will continue to work with clinical colleagues to decide on options for how best to deliver this service, to ensure we have the right support in place for patients. If we decide to start prescribing this medication, patients who meet the eligibility criteria will be invited by the surgery for an appointment to discuss with one of our clinicians.
"We use Heidi for clinical documentation and, where enabled, for certain non‑clinical meetings such as team or HR sessions. Heidi is a documentation aid for qualified and registered clinicians. It is not a clinical decision‑making tool and does not replace medical assessment. Clinicians are responsible for ensuring any notes accurately reflect the encounter. Patient audio is not retained; audio is streamed for transcription and discarded immediately after processing. We may share limited personal data about Heidi service usage with One Care so they can provide organisation‑level analytics and shared services to participating practices. For these activities, One Care processes personal data on our behalf under terms compliant with UK GDPR. Data shared are minimised for the stated purpose and do not include clinical note content unless strictly necessary and minimised.
Participants are notified at the start of non‑clinical sessions. Data is processed within the UK and protected by appropriate technical and organisational measures. Transcripts, draft notes, and generated documents are subject to organisation‑controlled automatic deletion between 1 and 90 days; clinicians can also delete manually at any time."
